The Wine Cellar Issue 1
The team at Justerini & Brooks share their must-have wines for your wine cellar this autumn
Piesporter Goldtropfchen, Riesling, Kabinett, Schloss Lieser, 2017
“This is the second year that Schloss Liser has made fruit from this exceptional site and the results are stunning. Bright complex and very precise fruit notes flood the nose, before a burst of ripe pineapple and mango washes across the palate. There's so much fruit here but also control, as great acidity and fabulous nervous energy provide the structure to control the vibrant fruit core.”
RRP: £10.83
Lenz, Riesling, Trocken, Emrich Schönleber, 2015
Beautiful fine bitter grapefruit flesh, clear shards of citrus fruit and zest, but no sourness such is the ripeness of the acidity. Superb balance, there's plenty of inviting fruit, but also restraint and tension. Great stuff. Just outside the boundaries of officially trocken, and yet seemingly almost dry. Lots going on for wine of just 11.5% abv.
RRP: £12.17
Royale Réserve, Brut, Rosé, Philipponnat, NV
Royale Réserve Rosé is a complex, subtle bottle of rosé where the red wine component, generally 7-8% of the blend, comes from the upper sections of the Clos des Goisses vineyard. With up to 30% reserve wines, again from the new two stage perpetual reserve system and a dosage of 9 grams per litre, this is a rosé that is onion peel in colour, complex in flavour with a fine bead and lovely transparency of flavours. This has all the interest and complexity to work really well with food, but also the balance to make a very fine aperitif.
RRP: £33.33
Le Rosé, IGP Vaucluse, Chêne Bleu, 2020
Chêne Bleu’s widely-acclaimed rosé is a high altitude blend centred on old vines Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Rolle (Vermentino) making up the balance. This is aromatic, full but very bright and bursting with red berry fruit. Offering great intensity of flavour and complexity. There is a distinct silkiness enticing you in and softening the summer fruit, peppered strawberries and cream, but before it all gets too much a snappy freshness returns on the finish bringing the wine back into focus, to leave you wanting another sip. A Rosé seductive enough to drink now, but sufficiently serious to age steadily and slowly over the next year.
RRP: £19.70
Justerini & Brooks, 250th Anniversary Cuvée, Champagne, Extra Dry, NV
A Champagne cuvee created in celebration of our 250th anniversary in 1999. Made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes by Paul Dangin in the Côtes de Bar, the wine is left on its lees for three years. This, together with excellent quality Pinot Noir fruit and the warmer climate of the Bar region, lends it great richness, generosity and opulent red fruit characteristics. A perennial Justerini & Brooks favourite.
